Anatomy of a Blog, Part 3: Key Elements to Improve Audience Engagement
This is the last blog in the series "Anatomy of a Blog." Below, we'll review best practices for distributing your blogs. Visit this link for Part 1 and this link for Part 2.
Audience Segmentation: This is a critical element which ensures you're sending the right content to the right people. Segment your email distribution list based on either the topic of your blog, the profession of your subscribers, and/or their location. For instance, you wouldn't send a blog about changes to Maryland tax laws for entrepreneurs to individual taxpayers in California.
Mass Email Provider: Use a mass email provider to distribute your blog to multiple people simultaneously. I use Mailchimp, a user-friendly and fairly inexpensive option. It also provides tools to help with audience segmentation.
Subscribe and Unsubscribe Buttons: Your blogs should provide readers with an option to subscribe, and the law requires you include an easy way for subscribers to unsubscribe.
Growing Your List: Your subscribe button should be in each blog, on your website, and in your email signature. Doing so provides multiple opportunities for contacts to subscribe to your blog and potentially become future clients.
Social Media: Post blogs to your social media profiles. This allows readers to easily share the content with their connections on various social media platforms, helping you build awareness and engagement with a new audience.
Again, blog designs can vary and not all blogs will have every element listed in this series. The specific components and layout of a blog may depend on the platform it's hosted on, the theme or template chosen, and your personal preferences.
